Kansas launches 74 investigations into Catholic clergy sex abuse
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday that its agents have begun 74 investigations into allegations of Catholic Church clergy sexual abuse.
Since February, the agency has received 119 reports of alleged abuse.
From these reports, noted the KBI, they initiated 74 different investigations into possible clergy abuse, taking place across 33 counties in Kansas.
“Victims are asked to report all incidents of sexual abuse that involve a member of the clergy, no matter how long ago the incident occurred, and even if it was previously reported to law enforcement or the church,” stated the KBI.
KBI agents added that they were still taking reports of sexual abuse and expect the investigations to take a long time to be resolved.
Last November, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt asked the KBI to investigate allegations of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy.
In February, the agency announced that it was initiating an investigation into claims of sexual abuse and was asking victims of abuse to contact them.
“The KBI task force will work with prosecutors and law enforcement partners to determine if any sexual abuse incidents should be considered for prosecution,” they said in February.
For his part, Schmidt asked the state’s four Catholic dioceses to release the names of priests accused of sexual misconduct.
In January, the Archdiocese of Kansas City released the names of 22 priests facing credible accusations of abuse, while in March the Diocese of Salina released a list of 14 clergy.
As of Tuesday, the remaining two Catholic dioceses of Wichita and Dodge City have not released any lists of clergy members credibly accused of abuse, according to The Wichita Eagle. Read more here

A transgender priest who left the Catholic church to become a woman says she still has the support of God after leaving the clergy.
Alisha Cacace, 37, of Basingstoke, Hampshire, felt like she was in the wrong body for as long as she can remember.
Brought up in a religious family she trained to become a priest at a young age despite battling with her identity.
She struggled for six years before a visit to an LGBT bar made her realise she had to be true to herself and she began to transition.
Ms Cacace, who was born male, has been on hormone replacement therapy for a year and says she has never been happier. Read more here

Vatican finds bones, deepening mystery in search for girl who disappeared 36 years ago
The Vatican reported a new twist Saturday in the mysterious, decades-old disappearance of a teenage girl.
Two sets of bones were found near the tombs of two 19th-century German princesses, raising hopes that they could be the remains of 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee, a Vatican official said. The tombs were opened earlier this week and found to be empty.
The bones were discovered as staffers were inspecting other spots the princesses may have been moved to in the cemetery of the Pontifical Teutonic College, Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said.
Those inspections “have so far led to the identification of two ossuaries placed beneath the floor of an area inside the Pontifical Teutonic College,” Gisotti said. “These are closed by a trap door, and these ossuaries have been sealed for subsequent examination and possible retrieval of material stored there.”
