Catholic Priest & Bishop Convicted Over Pedophilia Scandal In France
A French priest has been sentenced to two years in jail for sexually abusing multiple children and his former bishop given a suspended sentence of eight months for failing to report the abuse.
A court in central France handed down the verdict against the priest, Pierre de Castelet and retired bishop, Andre Fort on Thursday.
The convictions are just the latest in a series of world wide child sex abuse scandals that have rocked the Vatican.
RTE News reports: Pierre de Castelet, 69, was sentenced to two years in prison, with another year suspended, after abusing children during a summer camp in 1993 where he touched them while pretending to carry out medical examinations.
His superior, the former bishop of Orleans Andre Fort, 83, was given a suspended prison sentence of eight months for failing to notify French police when he was made aware of the abuse allegations in 2008.
Both men are expected to avoid serving time behind bars, however, under French law that allows a convict to apply for a non-custodial punishment in cases involving short jail sentences.
Prosecutions of bishops are extremely rare in France, with the last case dating back to 2001 when a bishop in the town of Bayeux-Lisieux was given a three-month suspended jail term for failing to report abuse.
After the judgements in the court in Orleans in central France, one of de Castelet’s victims, Olivier Savignac, said he was satisfied with the outcome. Read more here
Pope Francis has broken with previous popes, causing ‘heresies, schisms’: Vatican theologian
November 15, 2018 (edwardpentin.co.uk) –In a forceful interview with Italian Vaticanist Aldo Maria Valli, Msgr. Nicola Bux has warned that the current pontificate is issuing statements that are generating “heresies, schisms, and controversies of various kinds” and that the Holy Father should issue a profession of faith to restore unity in the Church.
In the interview, published Oct. 13 but overlooked due to the Youth Synod taking place in Rome last month, the theologian consultor to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints said “heretical statements” on marriage, the moral life and reception of the sacraments are now “at the center of a vast debate which is becoming more and more passionate by the day.”
Msgr. Bux said the origin of many of these questioned teachings — highlighted in a September 2017 filial correction and at a Rome conference in April on doctrinal confusion in the Church — is the Pope’s post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, but they have since become “considerably worse and more complicated.”
He said this has led some senior prelates, such as Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, one of the four cardinals to sign the dubia in 2016, to reiterate a call for a “profession of faith on the part of the Pope.”
But Msgr. Bux said this would be difficult to achieve given the Pope’s vision of the Church as a federation of ecclesial communities — something Msgr. Bux described as “a bit like the Protestant communities.”
Since the two synods on the family, the Italian theologian said “two gears” of faith and morality now exist, seen most clearly over whether to give Holy Communion to some “remarried” divorcees. This has caused “great discomfort” to “many bishops and parish priests” because of an “unstable and confused pastoral situation,” he said.
To remedy the situation, Msgr. Bux, a former consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Benedict XVI, still believes some kind of profession of faith is required of the Pope. He referred to a similar profession St. Paul VI made in 1968 that reaffirmed what is Catholic “in the face of the errors and heresies” that came immediately after the Second Vatican Council.
“If this doesn’t happen,” he warned, “the apostasy will deepen and the de facto schism will widen.” Read more here
Catholic University Dean suspended for supporting Kavanaugh
Daily Wire – A university dean who defended Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh from uncorroborated allegations of sexual assault has resigned from his leadership post.
Will Rainford, Catholic University’s dean of social service, had held his position for five years, but was suspended after tweeting logical questions of the women who came forward to accused Kavanaugh just before he was set to be confirmed.
“Swetnick is 55 y/o,” Rainford said on in a since-deleted tweet, according to The Washington Post. “Kavanaugh is 52 y/o. Since when do senior girls hang with freshmen boys? If it happened when Kavanaugh was a senior, Swetnick was an adult drinking with&by her admission, having sex with underage boys. Pittsburgh Priest Placed on Leave Amid Sex Abuse Allegations
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A priest in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has been placed on administrative leave after being accused of sexually abusing a minor.
The Diocese announced Saturday afternoon that Bishop David Zubik has placed 65-year-old Father Joseph Feltz on leave.

Feltz most recently served as pastor of Saint Christopher Parish in Prospect, Butler County. The Diocese says he retired from Saint Christopher Parish in October, but he remained in active ministry.
The priest is accused of sexually abusing a minor in the mid-1980s.
Feltz is among four priests named in 12 new lawsuits filed this week on behalf of victims. Feltz was not named in the grand jury report released earlier this year. Read more here
