A reckoning is underway in US Catholic Church as 1000s of Priest are outed as child molesters
Over the past four months, Roman Catholic dioceses across the U.S. have released the names of more than 1,000 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children in an unprecedented public reckoning spurred at least in part by a shocking grand jury investigation in Pennsylvania, an Associated Press review has found.
Nearly 50 dioceses and religious orders have publicly identified child-molesting priests in the wake of the Pennsylvania report issued in mid-August, and 55 more have announced plans to do the same over the next few months, the AP found. Together they account for more than half of the nation’s 187 dioceses.
The review also found that nearly 20 local, state or federal investigations, either criminal or civil, have been launched since the release of the grand jury findings. Those investigations could lead to more names and more damning accusations, as well as fines against dioceses and court-ordered safety measures. Read more here
Spontaneous Resignations in the Communication Discastery kick off a disastrous 2019 for the Vatican!
The Director and Vice-Director of the Vatican’s press office have resigned together, in a surprise move that appears to indicate strong tensions at the top of the city-state’s complicated communications structure.
The resignations of American Greg Burke and Spaniard Paloma García Ovejero seem to have caught their supervisor by surprise. Paolo Ruffini, head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication said in a public statement that he had just “learned” of the decision, and called it a “free and autonomous choice,” adding that, “he respected the decision they took.”
The resignations of Burke and García were announced with a short note published by the Vatican’s daily bulletin on the last day of 2018. Pope Francis immediately appointed Alessandro Gisotti, who was the head of Social Media for the Communications Dicastery, to new interim Director of the Press Office. Pope Francis: Christians Must Reject Sovereignty; Embrace Globalism
In his traditional Christmas speech, Pope Francis urged Christians to reject sovereignty and embrace globalism in order to make the world a better place.
Addressing the rise in populism and increasing hostility about illegal immigration among westerners, Pope Francis warned:
“Our differences are not a detriment or a danger; they are a source of richness. As when an artist is about to make a mosaic: it is better to have tiles of many colours available, rather than just a few,” the Pope told a large audience in the Vatican.”
“The experience of families teaches us this,” he said, “as brothers and sisters, we are all different from each other. We do not always agree, but there is an unbreakable bond uniting us, and the love of our parents helps us to love one another.”
Voiceofeurope.com reports: Among other things, the Pope also talked about materialism and its side effects:
“An insatiable greed marks all human history, even today, when, paradoxically, a few dine luxuriantly while all too many go without the daily bread needed to survive,” he said.
“Standing before the manger, we understand that the food of life is not material riches but love, not gluttony but charity, not ostentation but simplicity,” the Pope added. Source
“The secret not yet told”: Women describe alleged abuse by nuns
The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests – or SNAP – said it doesn’t keep count of sexual abuse allegations, but CBS News’ Nikki Battiste has spoken with several women who recently reported misconduct, ranging from forceful kissing to molestation, all carried out by nuns.
When Trish Cahill was 15 years old she said she confided in Sister Eileen Shaw at a convent in New Jersey. Cahill said she told Shaw things she’d never revealed to anyone about her now-deceased uncle – a priest – whom she claims sexually abused her, starting at age five.
“I would have done anything for her. I would have died for her,” Cahill said. “She gave me everything that was lacking that I didn’t even know I was lacking. I was so broken. She filled in all those pieces.”
She now describes that process as “grooming,” saying Shaw plied her with drugs and alcohol while teaching her how to have sex with a woman.
“I’m with my friends during the day. And I’m with this pedophile nun on the evenings and on the weekends, and in the summer,” Cahill said. Read more here
Homosexuality is to blame for sexual abuse, not Catholic church, claims German cardinal

A German cardinal on Friday provoked anger and controversy when he claimed the Catholic church was not responsible for sexual abuse by its clerics, and instead sought to pin the blame on homosexuality.
“What has happened in the church is no different from what is happening in society as a whole,” Cardinal Walter Brandmüller said. “The real scandal is that the Catholic church hasn’t distinguished itself from the rest of society.”
A study commissioned by the German Bishops Conference and published last year found that more than 3,600 children were sexually abused by Catholic clergy in Germany between 1946 and 2014.
But Cardinal Brandmüller claimed that only a “vanishingly small number” of clergy had committed abuses. He said the real problem was homosexuality and claimed it is “statistically proven” that there is a link between homosexuality and abuse.
Society “forgets or covers up the fact that 80 per cent of cases of sexual assault in the church involved male youths not children,” he told Germany’s DPA news agency in an interview a few days ahead of his 90th birthday.
Cardinal Brandmüller’s outburst comes days after the Pope urged Catholic bishops in the US to confront the “sins and crimes” of sexual abuse by the clergy and “the efforts made to deny or conceal them”. Read more here

PJMedia – The Vatican News website recently paid tribute to Cuba on the 60th anniversary of the Communist revolution in a post that was quickly deleted, according to reports.
The Communist island nation marked the occasion with celebrations on News Year’s Day, while several leftist Latin American leaders tweeted their best wishes.
The socialist despot president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro tweeted: “We commemorate the anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution led by Commander Fidel Castro. 60 years of sacrifices, struggles and blockade; There is the heroic Cuban people, an example of resistance and dignity to the world. Another Pope Francis Aide Under Investigation for Sex Abuse
Another Pope Francis aide is under criminal investigation for the sexual abuse of young priests and seminarians.
The Pope’s Protegé, Gustavo Óscar Zanchetta, suddenly resigned as bishop of Orán in Argentina last July 2017, allegedly due to “health reasons.” Francis, when presented with his resignation, immediately granted it within three days.
But now that Zanchetta is safely back behind the walls of the Vatican City, enjoying diplomatic immunity, he stands accused of harassing young seminarians.
CNA reports: Alessandro Gisotti, interim Holy See press officer, said Jan. 4 that “at the time of his resignation there had been against [Bishop Zanchetta] accusations of authoritarianism, but there had been against him no accusation of sexual abuse … the accusations of sexual abuse date to this autumn.”
Bishop Zanchetta, 54, was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Quilmes in 1991. He remained there until his 2013 appointment by Pope Francis as Bishop of Orán.
Gisotti noted that the bishop was not removed from Orán, but that he himself chose to resign, saying the decision was “linked to his difficulty in managing relations with the diocesan clergy and in very tense relations with the priests of the diocese,” and that he had “an incapacity to govern the clergy.”
In announcing his resignation, Bishop Zanchetta had cited “a problem of health”.
Between his resignation and his appointment to APSA nearly four months later, Bishop Zanchetta spent some time in Spain, Gisotti reported.
“After the period in Spain, in consideration of his capacity for administrative management, he was nominated as assessor of APSA.”
APSA manages the Holy See’s assets and real estate holdings.
Gisotti also noted that when the bishop was appointed to APSA, the accusations of sexual abuse had not yet come to light.
“On the basis of these accusations and of the news which recently emerged in the media, the Bishop of Orán has already collected some testimonies, which have yet to arrive to the Congregation for Bishops. If the elements needed to proceed are confirmed, the case will be referred to the special commission for bishops.”
The accusations of abuse against the bishop have apparently been levied by priests and seminarians.
While the investigation is ongoing, Gisotti stated, Bishop Zanchetta will not be working in his capacity as assessor. Source
