Pope Francis: Transition to Clean Energy Is ‘Challenge of Epochal Proportions’

Thomas D. Williams, Ph.D. – Humanity must devise a “long-term global strategy” to meet the problem of climate change, Pope Francis said Saturday, which requires phasing out fossil fuels.
Addressing participants at a meeting for executives in the oil and natural gas sectors, the pope urged his hearers to look to green energy as a key to humanity’s future while continuing to stump for the 2015 Paris Climate Accord.
“As you know, in December 2015, 196 Nations negotiated and adopted the Paris Agreement, with a firm resolve to limit the growth in global warming to below 2° centigrade, based on preindustrial levels, and, if possible, to below 1.5° centigrade,” Francis stated. “Some two-and-a-half years later, carbon dioxide emissions and atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases remain very high. This is disturbing and a cause for real concern.”
In what would almost seem an attempt to troll the Trump administration, Francis said that “even more worrying is the continued search for new fossil fuel reserves, whereas the Paris Agreement clearly urged keeping most fossil fuels underground.”
“Civilization requires energy, but energy use must not destroy civilization!” he said.
While correctly noting that “more than one billion people without electricity today need to gain access to it,” the pope rules out affordable fossil fuels, which have been the key to economic development in all first-world countries.
In the very next sentence, in fact, Francis insists that such “energy should also be clean, by a reduction in the systematic use of fossil fuels.”
“Our desire to ensure energy for all must not lead to the undesired effect of a spiral of extreme climate changes due to a catastrophic rise in global temperatures, harsher environments and increased levels of poverty,” he warns.
The pontiff—or his ghost writers—seems to share popular misconceptions regarding climate change, conflating CO2 emissions with air pollution. Air pollution, as the World Health Organization helpfully explains, is measured in the concentration of fine particulate matter in the air we breathe and has nothing to do with carbon dioxide, which is not a pollutant. Francis, a mainstream media darling which many still see as ‘modern Pope,’ has crushed Catholic church attendance in recent years, so what went wrong? A Gallop survey discovered that Catholic church presence in the United States between the pontificates of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis experienced the sharpest drop in years, because of the 1970s:
In the early years of Benedict pontificate between 2005 and 2008, approximately 45% of U.S Catholics participated in weekly Mass That average fell to 39% throughout the heart of the Francis papacy, between 2014 and 2017.
American Catholics between the ages of 50 and 59 saw the sharpest decrease in Mass presence in between the pontificates of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, falling from 46% to 31%, or a drop of 15%. Priest fatally shot at altar of Philippine Catholic church
ZARAGOZA, Philippines (AP) — Two gunmen killed a Roman Catholic priest as he prepared to celebrate Mass at the altar of a chapel in the northern Philippines, in the latest deadly attack on a priest in Asia’s largest predominantly Catholic nation, police said Monday.
The two men shot the Rev. Richmond Nilo with pistols Sunday night in the chapel in Zaragoza town in Nueva Ecija province. The gunmen, who fired through a chapel window, fled on a motorcycle and were being hunted by police.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said Nilo was the third Catholic priest to be killed in the country in recent months, and condemned the “outrageously evil act.” The killing left a pool of blood below the statue of the Virgin Mary. Source: Mail Online
UK: Cathedral hosts Ramadan “Grand Iftar Service” on anniversary of Islamic State London Bridge jihad massacre
The UK – London’s Southwark Cathedral hosted its second annual “Grand Iftar Service” on Sunday evening, marking the anniversary of the London Bridge terror attack last year. In addition to the 11 a.m. Eucharist service, the church also held a 3 p.m. Service of Commemoration for the attack, and an 8 p.m. service to celebrate the Muslim service….
“We stand united as communities, as Londoners, as people that want to celebrate our diversity,” Harun Khan, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said at the Iftar service.
In a statement, the cathedral announced it would “host its second Grand Iftar which, this year, will also mark the anniversary of the London Bridge attacks and will bring all communities together to celebrate Ramadan, to promote resilience and to share the common values of hope, peace and unity and celebrate the diversity of those who live and work in the Bankside area [of London].”

When the van crashed, the terrorists ran to the nearby Borough Market area and began stabbing people in and around restaurants and bars.
