Daily News – Mount Loretto nuns tortured, sexually abused me: woman claims of Staten Island Catholic mission
Sisters of Mercy? Not for one former Staten Island resident.
Robin Campbell, 65, who lived at the Mount Loretto Catholic Mission on Staten Island claims in court documents filed Monday that she was tortured by nuns for five years as a homeless girl, enduring ghoulish physical and sexual abuse almost every day.
“The only time I recall not being abused was when President Kennedy was assassinated,” Robin Campbell charges in court documents filed Monday. “Perhaps the nuns were in mourning.”
As a girl, Campbell — her maiden name is Miller — was placed in the Callagy Hall girls home in Manhattan due to her mother’s mental woes and her father’s drinking. Girls were only allowed to stay there a year, and she was shipped away to Mount Loretto once her time came.
Campbell called the mission home from the time she was six-years old until she was 11. She recounted something more along the lines of a house of horrors than one of worship, in her Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.
She described living in a room that housed 100 girls in 50 bunk beds and alleged being assigned a bed closest to the door — presumably for the access it provided at least one of her tormentors.
“I would often wake up and Sister Rosemarie would be at the side of my bed (just inside the door) with her hand under the covers,” she claimed in an affidavit, describing her sexual abuse. “This happened very frequently, way more times than I could count, and many more times than I could possibly remember.”
To gain a reprieve, Campbell said she would feign illness so she’d be sent to infirmary. But she claimed Sister Rosemarie was not her only tormentor and leveled accusations against sisters Helen, Agnes, Phillip-Marie, Juanita and a Mrs. Hartman.
