In a bracing October essay titled “Catholicism After 2018,” First Things editor Rusty Reno pinpoints an acceptance of a homosexual subculture in the Catholic clergy as the core issue underlying recent sex abuse scandals assailing the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis’s approval rating has fallen to an all-time low, according to a new CNN poll showing that fewer than 50 percent of Americans now have a favorable opinion of the pontiff.
Fewer than half of Americans (48 percent) now say they have a favorable view of the pope, CNN reported, which represents a significant drop since January 2017, when the pontiff enjoyed a two-thirds approval rating. Pope Francis Says Accused Pastors Are Like Jesus on ‘Good Friday’
Bishops who are accused should remain silent like Jesus on Good Friday when the crowds called out for his crucifixion, Pope Francis said Tuesday.
When people insulted Jesus on Good Friday and shouted, “Crucify him,” the pope said in his morning homily at the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, “he remained silent because he had compassion for those people deceived by the powerful.”
“He was silent. He prayed,” Francis said.
“In the same way, the pastor, in difficult times, in times when the devil is unleashed, where the pastor is accused—accused by the Great Accuser through so many people, so many powerful ones—suffers, offers his life and prays,” the pope said. Read More at Breitbart News
‘Vice Pope’ Says Cardinal McCarrick’s Homosexual Abuse Was a ‘Private Matter’
Papal adviser Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga said last week that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s serial sex abuse and the way the pope handled it is a “private matter” that should not be treated as a sensational story.
“Turning a private matter into a bombshell headline that explodes in the world and whose shrapnel does damage to the faith of many people does not seem right,” the Honduran cardinal said in reference to a recent report by the former papal nuncio to the United States.
“I think that a management issue ought to be aired with more serene and objective criteria, not in a negative tone charged with very bitter expressions,” said Maradiaga, who is often referred to as Francis’ “vice pope” because of his position of prominence in the Vatican and his unparalleled influence in the Francis pontificate.
The cardinal’s comments were made in reference to an August 25 report by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, in which the former nuncio accused Pope Francis of rehabilitating Cardinal McCarrick and elevating him to a position of influence despite knowledge of his serial homosexual abuse over decades. Archbishop’s computer contained over 100,000 child porn files
More than 100,000 child porn videos and photos have been found on the computer of former Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, who is also accused of raping numerous children in the Dominican Republic and Poland.
Wesolowski, currently under house arrest at the Vatican, is one of the highest-ranking church officials to be accused of sexually abusing children during the Catholic Church’s widespread and costly sexual abuse scandal.
The videos and photos of child pornography were stored on a computer in the office at the Holy See diplomatic compound in the Dominican Republic, where Wesolowski served as papal nuncio in Santo Domingo. Read more at Patheos
Leaked Report Reveals Catholic Priests Sexually Abused Thousands Of Children In Germany
According to Spiegel Online and Die Zeit, the report reveals that as many as 3,677 children were abused by clergy between 1946 and 2014 and the majority of victims were boys aged 13 or younger, 969 of whom were altar boys.
The report is just the latest in a long series of revelations that have uncovered decades of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests around the world.
RT reports: The study, commissioned by the German Bishops Conference, was conducted by three universities and was not due to be revealed until the September 25 conference.
According to the leaked research, every sixth case was a rape and at least 1,670 clergy were involved. Many of the priests caught abusing had recently been transferred to other parishes and a mere one-third of accused members of the clergy were investigated by the Catholic Church. Read more at RT
Pope Francis Commissioned Report to Attack Sex Abuse Victims While Archbishop of Buenos Aires
Pope Francis commissioned a four-book study in 2010 as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires attacking sexual abuse victims and defending a priest convicted of molesting a teenage boy.
Francis, who was then known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, asked a lawyer and jurist by the name of Marcelo Sancinetti to carry out a more than 2,600-page study encompassing four volumes for the Argentinian Episcopal Conference to discredit the alleged victims of Father Julio César Grassi.
The volumes described the victims as “false accusers” and claimed their accusations were just ways of projecting their own sexual desires on Grassi, who was convicted of sexually abusing a boy at his Happy Children Foundation — an organization dedicated to rescuing homeless children — and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Found within the depths of the Pennsylvania grand jury report on priest sex abuse is a letter written by a former Diocese of Scranton bishop.
A priest raped a girl, got her pregnant, and arranged an abortion, according to the grand jury report. And then-Bishop James C. Timlin wrote a letter expressing his feelings: “This is a very difficult time in your life, and I realize how upset you are. I too share your grief.”
But the letter was not for the girl. It was addressed to the rapist.
Father Thomas D. Skotek was ordained on June 8, 1963, in the Diocese of Scranton. He sexually assaulted a girl over the span of five years while serving as pastor of St. Casimir in Freeland, according to the report. Read more at York Daily Record

Catholic Church Pays Out ‘Record Setting Settlement’ $27.5 Million to 4 Abused Boys
A New York-based Catholic diocese and after-school program have agreed to pay four sexually abused boys $27.5 million in what is believed to be the largest settlement ever reached for a church sexual abuse case.
The Diocese of Brooklyn agreed to a “record setting settlement” of $27.5 million, or $6.875 million per unnamed boy, according to a statement released Tuesday by the law firm Gair, Gair, Conason, Rubinowitz, Bloom, Hershenhorn, Steigman & Mackauf.
The four boys were abused by Angelo Serrano, a former Catholic church educator who committed the abuse between 2003 and 2009, his victims being as young as 8 years old. Read more at the Christian Post
